New Year’s Eve is a time to celebrate, and the last thing you want is any health or safety setbacks. No matter what plans you have in store, keep these tips in mind.
1. Plan accordingly
If you are attending a party or going to a public event, make sure to inform your family or friends about your plans for the evening, and update them if anything changes. Remember to bring a phone charger—having a portable one can be particularly useful if there is no available outlet. Stay aware of your surroundings.
2. Celebrate safely
Alcohol is a common part of New Year's Eve celebrations. Even if you and your friends are not drinking, you will likely come across intoxicated partygoers throughout the evening. If you do choose to drink, be mindful of your limits. Likewise, leave the fireworks to the professionals. If you decide to join in, light fireworks one at a time and step back immediately. Never attempt to relight a dud; instead, soak them and used fireworks with water before disposing of them. Always supervise children and pets, and never aim or throw fireworks at others.
3. Watch your step
New Year's Day is one of the most dangerous days of the year for pedestrians. If you are walking, stick to designated pedestrian paths and stay in well-lit areas. Always cross at crosswalks.
4. Avoid driving if possible
Whether you are driving or riding as a passenger, the roads can be especially risky on New Year's Eve. Contribute to everyone's safety by avoiding drinking and driving, and make sure no one around you drives while impaired by alcohol or other substances.
